Like any procedure, cosmetic tattooing requires prep and recovery work. But don’t start requesting annual leave just yet because though you’re technically going to have a procedure done, it’s not that daunting.
This is a guide to pre and post-treatment care that will ensure you get the best results for your cosmetic tattooing.
Before Your Appointment
- Make sure you’re up to date on all your medications, because you’ll be popping those down on a medical form before you head in.
- If your appointment is on a Saturday, exercise a bit of willpower the day before and ensure you don’t have any alcohol in your system! This is because it could affect the colour deposit and make you more prone to bleeding and sensitivity. You’ll want to limit your caffeine intake for the same reason.
- Don’t reach for Aspirin, Ibuprofen or blood thinning medications (but consult your doctor first of course) within 24 to 48 hours of your treatment, and cut Omega3 fish oils out altogether for two weeks beforehand. This is something you can discuss with me beforehand.
- If you are having your brows done and have an ideal shape in mind, bring a few reference photos with you to your appointment. I can have a look and discuss what will work for you regarding your age, face shape and skin type. It’s the same deal with lip colour and eyeliner styles, but usually this is discussed at a consultation.
- Make sure you haven’t been on Accutane in the last 12 months—if you have, we’ll have to take a raincheck on giving you beautiful brows.
- Avoid waxing your brow 2-3 days before your appointment. Don’t worry—if I see any strays, I’ll pluck them myself!
- Steer clear of facial peels too for at least one week before your appointment.
- And my last tip is to shower and wash your hair as close to your appointment as you can – otherwise you’ll be frustrated keeping moisture off your eyebrows for 10 days afterwards. You’ll be able to wash your hair and face during this time, you’ll just need to be careful!
After Your Appointment
- Here’s the hard part—don’t get any moisture on your tattooing. I will instruct you as to how long, depending on what treatment you have had. Getting the tattooed area wet can affect the way they heal and cause it to fade faster and inconsistently. Yes, it’s an annoying rule, but it’s the most important one.
- Lay off the brow makeup as well—just try to avoid any sort of substance all together on those precious new brows.
- This includes sweat because any sort of sport or exercise that’ll give you a glistening forehead needs to be given the flick for ten days.
- Don’t schedule yourself in for any laser, chemical treatments or facial peels until approximately 2 weeks after your appointment.
- Avoid touching your tattooing altogether as itching and scratching might lead to long-term scarring.
- Once your brows are completely healed, make sure you slip, slop, slap a smidge of SPF 30 or higher on them whenever you head out into the sun as it’ll prevent the colour pigment fading quickly. As for lip tattooing, lip balm will be your best friend.
- No matter how many age lines you’ve got going on, avoid botox around the treatment area for approximately two weeks after your appointment.
Don’t be put off by this long list of dos and don’ts, because by the end of it all you’ll be able to wake up with make up!
