Frequently Asked Questions
1How long will my cosmetic tattooing last?
While the average client's tattooing lasts approximately 12 months, some need a refresh appointment after 6 months, and others can hold out for up to 2 years. The longevity of your semi-permanent make up depends on a number of factors such as sun exposure, density of the pigment used, your skin type and your metabolism. It's useful to send Amanda a picture of your brows 6-8 months after your last appointment, so that she can determine when they'll need touching up again.
2Will medication or ill health affect my result?
Smoking can impact the result and longevity of tattooing, especially on the lips. Blood-thinning medications, including fish oils, can have an effect on how the tattooing heals, while anti-depressants and medications for anxiety may change how the pigment holds over time. Amanda can discuss the factors of illness and medication with you at a consultation, but feel free to contact us if you have any specific questions or concerns.
3Will facial treatments or creams affect the longevity of my tattooing?
Face creams with any active ingredients will fade the tattooing. For instance, if you put cream on your forehead and not on your eyebrows it still will travel under the skin and in time fade your eyebrows sooner and in some cases alter the colour. Most moisturisers, toners etc can be safely used without impacting the tattooing.
4How can I be confident in who I choose as a technician?
It can be a bit scary choosing someone to cosmetically tattoo you - it's your face after all! Take your time and do your research, ensuring you read many reviews from actual tattoo clients. View lots of “before” and “after” photos, and make sure the photos actually belong to the technician. The most important thing is to find someone who has substantial, proven experience. Be careful to not be fooled by magazines ads as they are not actual reviews, they are mostly paid for.
5Should I come to my appointment with a clean face?
This is completely up to you, as Amanda can just wipe off make up around the area to be tattooed. It can be helpful to wear make up to your consultation to give Amanda an idea of the style you usually like.
6Do I have to constantly shave off my eyebrows afterwards?
You absolutely do not need to shave your eyebrows off at any point to create new ones. Cosmetic tattooing is meant to enhance your brows, not replace them, so while a few hairs here and there may need to be plucked you shouldn't let anyone shave off your brows.
7Is cosmetic tattooing worth the cost?
If you calculate what you spend annually on make up products, not to mention the time it takes to apply them every day, most of my clients feel very justified in this semi-permanent solution. Your eyebrows frame your face, your eyes are the windows to your soul and your smile is one of the first things people notice upon meeting you. Ensuring these features are effortlessly perfect will save you time, money, and for many people provide an immense confidence boost.
8How do I take care of my tattooing?
Caring for your tattooing is as simple as keeping it dry; your brow tattooing needs to be kept free of water, creams, make up etc for 10 days following your appointment, while eyeliner and lips should be kept dry for 5 days. This may sound more daunting than it is, but just remember to avoid heavy sweating, be careful when washing your hair and face, and only apply make up around the tattooed area.
9Will it hurt?
Numbing cream is applied before and during your tattooing to help ensure a pain free experience. Most clients find it hurts no more than a 2 out of 10, however this varies between individuals and you may feel it slightly more at your touch up appointment.
10How long does the procedure take?
This depends on the area being tattooed. Your first eyebrow appointment will be approximately 2 hours, and touch ups are a bit shorter at 1.5 hours. All lip tattooing appointments are 2- 3.5 hours long, while eyeliner tattooing varies between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on the style and thickness. Every appointment includes 30-45min of numbing time.
11Will I look strange while my tattooing heals?
During the first few days after your appointment, your tattooing will look slightly darker than the end result as a scab forms over each hair stroke or the tattooed area. Towards the end of the healing process, these scabs will start to flake off naturally, so there may appear to be gaps in the tattooing. This is completely normal, and unfortunately there aren't any other words for scab so it sounds a bit more nasty than it is - there's no redness or swelling so the difference isn't typically very noticeable. Very few clients feel the need to take time off work and hide away while their tattooing heals.
12When do I need to refresh my tattooing?
As everyone fades at different rates, your tattooing could need refreshing anywhere between 2 months and 2 years. When you notice your tattooing starting to fade or develop gaps, just email or text Amanda some photos of your face without make up and in natural light. We can then determine the best time for you to book in. Be careful to not put off your refresh for too long, as if it's faded too much you may need the tattooing fully redone over two appointments. Refresh appointments are often booked up 1-3 months in advance, so please keep this in mind when booking in.
13Is cosmetic tattooing hygienic/safe?
Amanda always keeps her health and safety training up to date, and uses hygienic, disposable tools. Cosmetic tattooing is a low risk procedure when performed by an experienced technician, and Amanda is happy to put you at ease if you have any specific questions or concerns.
